Troy Murray, a celebrated former Chicago Blackhawks NHL center and longtime broadcaster, has died at the age of 63 after a prolonged battle with cancer, the team announced on Saturday. The Canadian-born hockey figure, known affectionately as Muzz, spent more than four decades as a player, commentator and ambassador for the Blackhawks organization, the team said in a statement.
Troy Murray was drafted by the Blackhawks in the third round of the 1980 NHL Draft and became a cornerstone of the franchise during 12 seasons in Chicago, earning the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 1986 as the league’s top defensive forward. He tallied 584 points in 915 NHL games over a 15‑year career that included stints with the Winnipeg Jets, Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins and a Stanley Cup victory with the Colorado Avalanche in 1996.
Following his retirement from professional play in 1997, Troy Murray transitioned seamlessly to broadcasting and became one of the most recognizable voices of Blackhawks hockey. He served as a radio color analyst for WGN 720 for more than two decades and later as president of the Blackhawks Alumni Association, roles through which he connected generations of fans and maintained a visible presence in the Chicago hockey community.
Troy Murray publicly disclosed his cancer diagnosis in 2021 and continued to work in the broadcast booth when his health permitted, stepping away from regular duties this season as his condition worsened, according to Blackhawks officials. The organization’s chairman and CEO, Danny Wirtz, described Murray as the epitome of a Blackhawk whose spirit and dedication resonated throughout the franchise and beyond.
Off the ice and airwaves, Troy Murray was widely respected for his leadership, professionalism and commitment to community initiatives. His influence reached beyond statistics, with teammates and fans alike praising his mentorship and character. Funeral plans have not yet been announced.
