Ian Balding, the renowned British racehorse trainer best known for handling the champion Mill Reef, has died at the age of 87, according to reports published on Friday. Balding passed away on January 2 after a long career that spanned more than five decades in British racing, during which he trained multiple Classic winners and shaped generations of top-level horses.

Balding was widely regarded as one of the most influential trainers of the modern era. He trained Mill Reef to victory in the Epsom Derby, the Eclipse Stakes, and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 1971, achievements that cemented both horse and trainer in racing history. His success extended beyond Mill Reef, with major wins across Britain and Europe.

Based for much of his career at Kingsclere in Hampshire, Balding took over the historic training operation previously run by his father and later passed the role to his son, Andrew Balding, who has since become one of Britain’s leading trainers. Racing officials and industry figures credited Balding with combining traditional horsemanship with an evolving understanding of modern training methods.

Tributes were paid across the racing world, with colleagues noting his professionalism, attention to detail, and lasting contribution to the sport. The British Horseracing Authority acknowledged Balding’s role in shaping post-war British racing, while former owners and jockeys recalled his calm authority and deep knowledge of thoroughbreds.

Balding is also known outside racing as the father of broadcaster Clare Balding, who has frequently spoken publicly about her father’s influence and lifelong dedication to horses.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
