Pittsburgh, United States — The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired forward Elmer Soderblom from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a 2026 third-round draft pick, the teams announced Friday, adding size and depth to Pittsburgh’s roster ahead of the NHL trade deadline. The pick originally belonged to the San Jose Sharks, according to team statements.
Elmer Soderblom, a 24-year-old left winger from Sweden, has appeared in 39 NHL games this season and recorded two goals and one assist. The 6-foot-8 forward is known for his physical presence and reach, attributes that have made him one of the tallest players currently in the league.
Penguins president of hockey operations and general manager Kyle Dubas confirmed the transaction in a statement, saying the move was completed on trade deadline day as the club continues to adjust its roster for the remainder of the season.
Over his NHL career with Detroit, Elmer Soderblom has totaled 22 points, including 11 goals and 11 assists, across 86 games. He has also spent time in the American Hockey League with the Grand Rapids Griffins, where he contributed offensive production and postseason appearances during development seasons.
Detroit originally selected Elmer Soderblom in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL Draft. Before arriving in North America, he played in Sweden’s top professional league with Frölunda HC and represented Sweden internationally, including at the 2021 World Junior Championship and the 2019 Under-18 World Championship.
The Penguins gain a large-bodied winger under contract through the 2026–27 season with an annual cap hit of about $1.125 million, providing a relatively low-cost depth option as the team evaluates its lineup moving forward.
For Detroit, the deal adds a future draft asset as the organization continues to manage roster depth and long-term development plans.
The teams are expected to integrate the transaction immediately as the NHL season continues. The story is developing.
